Sans Souci (without worry) is anything but.
I went here for dinner during restaurant week in Cleveland. I picked it because it had this great sounding duck special.
I was meeting a friend who I knew was already there. When I walked in I told the host I was meeting someone who was inside. He assured me that no man was waiting in there, but that I could look around if I wanted. I saw my friend sitting at a table around the corner. There was only one other table in the restaurant, and my friend had told the same host that I would be looking for him. How do you forget that conversation when there is almost no one in your establishment? Weird.
So then our waiter came by. He offered no suggestions, didn't say "hi," didn't go over the menu, no smile, nothing. I asked him to suggest a wine for me since I already knew I would be having the duck. Of course he brought me the most expensive Pino Noir on the list (which I should have expected, my fault)
When my duck came it was so tough that I couldn't cut it with my butter knife. (All good duck should fall off the bone, IMO) It took the waiter 10 minutes to come back and check on us (standard in my book is 2 bites/2 minutes) in which I had to ask for a steak knife.
Throughout dinner I could hear the same waiter go into detail about the menu with the other tables, and talk and smile with them. I leaned over to my friend and asked "Is it just me, or do you feel like our waiter is being nicer to the other tables than he is being to us?" "Yeah," my friend replied "I was getting that feeling too."
At this time both of our drinks had run out. We were never offered another round. I would have bought another $15 glass of wine, but I guess the waiter couldn't be bothered?
Then when it came time to choose a dessert the waiter mixed up the flavors of the dishes, and what we thought we were getting is not what we got (an honest mistake, but at this time I was fed up).
I will say that the waiter looked like he was the only working that day, and he did get a few more tables to run, so I can understand if he was weeded. I have worked in many restaurants, and my friend is the manager of a nice restaurant downtown, so we can be very forgiving. From the time we walked in, however, we felt like we weren't wanted there. I get the impression it is because we are both under 30 and ordering off the "cheap" menu. I always tip over 20%, and I always round up. For Sans Souci, I made an exception.
