From the outside, the Shamrock Tavern & Restaurant appears to be like many other establishments along Lakewood's famed Madison Avenue. Once inside, however, you see it's much bigger than you'd have guessed, with a long bar and tables in the front, a spacious dining room with fireplace to the rear, and a backyard-style patio with umbrella covered picnic tables, horseshoes and shuffleboard court. The interior is nice, with hunter green walls covered by plaques and pictures, baskets and hanging plants. Even the ladies' room is nice and clean!
The 3-page menu features burgers and a couple dozen sandwiches, all the typical "bar" sides, wings, ribs and steak. I got a burger while my boyfriend had ribs. Both were very good, the burgers big half-pounders and ribs fall-apart tender. He was also happy to be able to watch the Indians game outside. Our timing was good - we got there just at the end of happy hour, which features $1.50 beers and well drinks, but Indians' homers afforded the opportunity for more "cheap" beers. Food prices range from $3.95 - $14.95 or so.
If you're looking for bar action, they've got all the unsual stuff inside: pool table, touch screen games, golf machine, a jukebox, and lots of TVs with sports. If you'd prefer a quieter time, head back to the dining room where you can sit and talk in relative peace. There's lots of activity going from the bar to the patio, however. Ohio's new smoking law makes the fenced yard a valued spot for smokers; nonsmokers like myself appreciate the smoke free interior, though. The servers were nice, but obviously harried running from the bar to busy patio.
We met one of the owners, Micki, when she came to check on us. She was nice too, sincerely interested in whether we'd had a good time and been served well. Altogether a very friendly and casual place, and a pleasant surprise. We'll be back.
