Last evening I took my daugher out for Sushi at the Shuhei Restaruant on Chagrine here in Beachwood. My family has eaten there dozens of times over the last several years, probably 8 - 10 times a year, and have enjoyed going there.
As usual we were seated fairly quickly at a decent four-seat table. I did notice, however, that the hostess looked my daughter up and down as if there was something wrong with her. While I thought this was strange I didn't worry about it at the time.
About five minutes after we were seated the same hostess came up and told us that we couldn't sit at that table and would have to move. When I asked why she said that it had been reserved for a party of four. She then moved us to a small table in the corner of the restaurant. At this time there were four other four-seat tables open and at least six other tables available. About ten minutes later a very attractive white couple came in and were seated at the table we were previously at. During our meal parties of two were seated at all of the other four-seat tables as well. During the meal I got up and asked the hostess again why we were moved, and she said that the table we had been seated at was "always reserved for our normal customers so you had to move ....". It should be noted that my family has been seated at that table before on several occassions, and that the table is simply a four-seat table along the wall but in clear view of the bar and dinning room. It was not marked as "reserved".
Further, we were both dressed appropriatly (I was in a dress shirt and slacks and my daughter was casually dressed pretty much like any other Beachwood teenager on a Friday Night).
I'm shocked at this kind of treatment, especially here in our own city. I am further shocked at the dismissive and condensending attitude of the Shuhei staff. While I am not sure race was the cause, I simply can't think of any other reason for this strange and offensive treatment.

A nondescript office building on Chagrin Boulevard houses Shuhei, one of the area's most beloved Japanese restaurants. The atmosphere is, in all senses, traditional: Silk-screen prints hang on the walls, and the servers' kimonos are tied as tight as the buns atop their heads. That tradition lends itself to the cuisine, which relies heavily on sushi and sashimi (though meat and poultry dishes, as well as salads and noodle bowls, are available). The sushi bar's offerings are available ê la carte or in entrees such as sushi omakase (a selection of nigiri and maki sushi) and tekka domburi (fresh raw tuna served on a bed of sushi rice). Also available is the popular Shuhei Special Bento Box, a traditional Japanese meal including sushi, sashimi, tempura, udon noodles and negimaki.
