The Sawyer House has been a perennial favorite since we arrived in the area in 2001. We dine there 3-4 times a year. Over the past year, though, quality and service has declined. Lunch today was "sad but true". It started with a fast round of soft drinks, but no condiments on the table for iced tea, and no offers of refills for the entire meal. Then a 40-minute wait for the first food including bread, but only a 2-minute separation between appetizers and entrees. And the food, sadly a big disappointment... salmon burnt to a crisp on one side (burnt side down), over-salted burger (and I love salt). An offer to credit the burger, but no manager to relay our concerns (was this a factor of the teenage wait staff?). Our experience is that the wait staff is more mature and service-oriented for the dinner crowd. All-in-all a poor dining experience... and watch out for the pot-hole when pulling in off of Mentor Ave. It is big enough to sink a small car.

After being on the northeast side of cleveland and driving by Sawyer House many times I recently went in for lunch and was VERY impressed!! Have been back for lunch several times and dinner several times. Very nice atmoshere and the food is delicious. The take out wine area is stocked fabulously. Definitely recommend!!!

Set amid the general hubbub of strip malls and saloons so pervasive along Mentor Avenue, a warm, inviting tavern with the culinary prowess of the Sawyer House may too often be overlooked; if you fail to take notice, however, it's certainly your loss. Welcomed by an elevated bar area outfitted with dark walnut stools and tables, and a take-away wine room filled with bottles of red, white and every color in between, patrons may wish to pop in for a quick lunch or to select a bottle for that special occasion. Lunch favorites include a pasta - as well as a pizza - de jour, sandwiches, salads and soups; try the velvety lobster bisque, a dish that accurately reflects the tavern's hearty look and feel, and is especially tasty when sopped up with a bit of the complimentary fresh-baked garlic focaccia bread. The Sawyer House staff shouldn't be surprised if lunch customers come back for dinner, as the tavern's enticing evening menu, including steaks, chops, seafood and our favorite, a veal Wellington, is certain to cause more than a bit of temptation for a return visit.
