Worth it for the Belgian Frites alone!
I've been to Bar Cento several times now, both by myself and with various groups, and have always had a good experience -- sometimes even great! The menu is limited and changes with the seasons. The food is what's fresh and, when possible, local. Sometimes there is salad, sometimes not. There is always great pizza -- I really like the pizza with fresh mozzarella and basil. Fresh fish and meat specials are reliably creative and good. The vegetable sides are inventive -- different than you'll find in most places. Many wines and beers by the glass, and you can take bottles home at great prices. I wish the red wine was not quite so warm when served, but this is minor. We have had good to really great service. Atmosphere is casual and very pleasant.
BUT, it's all about the FRITES!!! If you go to Bar Cento or the connected Bier Markt and don't try the Belgian Frites, you are missing out on an extraordinary experience! I know, I don't eat fried food, either, but Bar Cento's version of french fries - crispy, perfectly seasoned, unbelievably tasty (I think from the duck fat), served steaming in a paper cone alongside various dipping sauces - are worth every calorie and gram of cholesterol.
The new Speakeasy downstairs is wonderful for a drink after dinner. Very unique cocktails made by an enthusiastic bartender who know what he's doing. They flavor some of the gins and vodkas, etc., in-house. Try the Bees Knees, made with lemon juice and gin that has a honeycomb marinating in it. Smoooth and very well-balanced. I look forward to visiting when they have live music.
