North Akron Nugget
A couple of years ago, I was getting my bike serviced in the North Hill district of Akron. Now this isn't a location known for it's cuisine, except for the heyday of Nick Anthe's Restaurant down the street. I asked the staff at the shop about getting something to eat, and I was directed to a new restaurant called "The Office" that is located at Temple Square near the corner of North Main and Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. On entering, I immediately felt underdressed. The decor is very upscale, with light jazz playing in the background. Underdressed or not, the barman made me feel welcome, and I sat down with the daily menu. What a nice surprise - great selections, good prices. I had the lobster ravioli (not the usual thing I have for lunch while riding my motorcycle) and it was perfect. I made up my mind to stop again with my wife. We finally made it on Valentines day 2009 and had a totally relaxing, romantic, and memorable meal.
We started out with the seared tuna and sesame noodle appetizer called "Twisted Noodles". If this was the only thing they served, I would come back as often as I could. The tuna was perfectly seared, and on a bed of sesame and yakitori sauce seasoned noodles that could have come right out of the Empire World Sechuan Restaurant in New York City. They are awsome. For the entree, I had the rack of lamb and my wife had the braised short ribs. Both were perfect, and the presentation looked like a menu glamour shot photo. We shared a light desert and headed home after the valet (free) returned our car.
I left out one of the best things about this place. It is a Martini bar - a first-class Martini bar. It was fun watching the bartenders creating some exotic concoction and then hearing the approval of a guest. I had a standard martini (chilled in a shaker, poured in a chilled glass, perfectly dry), but by wife had a valentine special, complete with a heart on top, that she said was prety tasty.
We went back to The Office last night after a concert at E.J. Thomas hall, and the experience repeated itself. The food was delicious, and pricing for all of our visits was moderate.
If there was a downside, the bartenders seemed a little overwhelmed on Valentines day, but in their defense, it was pretty busy.
We will be back to The Office as often as we can. I hesitated to write this review, because usually when someone yells "GOLD!" it starts a rush - and this little restaurant is definitely an undiscovered shiny nugget.
