Charred by the Fire

So went here recently and had the Arctic Char. It was definitely just alright and I have had better and worse. My wife had duck which was really amazing. I think we got some chocolate thing for desert (I usually don't get to choose) and it was good. The pricing is not cheap but I am basing my "just alright" review on the price. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very nice, as is shaker square in general. This is the 3rd time I have been here, once just for drinks. I must say that I love the area, although Sarava wins hands down for happy hour. This has a slightly older feel and an older crowd. The service was great!

Ratatouille Divine by Katz

Not a better restaurant in Cleveland for diversity with a little FIRE. Doug K creates divine dishes that will will take you back to that homey-comfort food yet with a flare that leaves you wanting more! Delicious clay-stone bread for starters.

Make Fire a regular!

This is our favorite restaurant in Cleveland, bar none! Granted, we've only been here 18 months, but have made it a point to hit all the hot spots. Fire consistently delivers in all categories, great food, exceptional service & ambiance. I've enjoyed romantic one-on-one dinners and most recently, a business dinner for eight with guests from Baltimore, Chicago, Minneapolis, and LA. Everyone raved about dinner the following day.

Close to Home... and the Food is Exceptional

if you live in the Heights and want some really great food, you have to try Fire. it's funny how people seem to love it or hate it, but i think that's mostly due to the atmosphere, which for whatever reason -- separates people. my wife and i visit fire every couple of months for a special night out. the staff is always friendly and the food is exceptional. the duck is great, and i know my father in law loved the rack of lamb. if you're turned off by "loud" noise... ask to sit in the back room... it's more intimate and definitely more "quite".

Five diamond delightful!!!

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Cleveland, right up there with Classics, Giovanni's and Chez Francios (Vermillion). Excellent drinks and food with a great atmosphere. If you live in Shaker or Cleveland Heights, it is THE most conveniantly-located great restaurant on the eastside.

one of cleveland's finest restaurants

as i was surfing through various restaurant reviews on this site, i read with great dismay the prior review of fire. i must say that i could not disagree more with "cam's" assesement of this fine restaurant. i dine frequently at fire and have always found the food to be quite delicious and flavorsome (the duck is a true culinary delight), and the staff is very friendly, attentive and accommodating. the ambience is definitely cool and stylish and the level of noise has never been an issue. overall it is certainly not a restaurant to be missed on one's dining circuit!

Very Disappointing

My wife and I just returned from an anniversary dinner and our first (and last) visit to Fire. It started out as a very exciting date; in the end I might as well have eaten a box of salt for supper. Everything on my plate was salty; I had the pork chop. Even my wife thought her rice was a little salty (she had the cod.) I told our waitress that I found my meal salty, and she gave an explanation of soaking the meat in brine. I guess I question why there would be even more salty bits of pork added to the vegtables. The waitress did indicate she would bring something else for me if I wanted; but I was quite turned off by the pork. After giving it some thought I have to rate the service as poor. They should have shown more concern over my complaint. (She didn't even offer to adjust the bill.) The atmosphere was hip, fun, but a bit noisy. This is a matter of personal preference, so I'll make the comment that it is noisy, but I won't rate it poorly for that. Overall let's face it... we go to a restaurant to eat. It's easy to overlook some things, but the food needs to be exceptional! My mother-in-law can make things salty! Cam

Northern Ohio Live Magazine

Chef-owner Doug Katz named his restaurant after the fundamental energy source used to turn separate ingredients into one outstanding meal; the combination of flavorful food and the hip, high-energy vibe in Katz's sleek dining room is hot indeed. Entrees feature fresh, seasonal, local and artisanal ingredients; Katz also favors using cooking techniques that allow him to quickly sear and crisp the outsides of fish, meat and poultry while keeping the insides moist and juicy. Appetizers range from mussels and shrimp to fire-roasted banana peppers and chicken livers; entrees include seafood, pasta, beef, poultry - even a cheeseburger and fries. Knowing the chef's affinity for the grill, it's one cheeseburger you won't forget anytime soon.

The grapes of fire

Wine tastings. Wonder who invented the idea? In ancient time wine was considered an alternative to bad drinking water. A couple of decades ago in the U.S. it was a snob's drink. Nowadays it's big with just about everybody. Anyway, the Fire Wine Society hosts a monthly wine tasting dinner at fire restaurant in Shaker Square--and a very nice job they do of it. We tasted ordinary fish that had had small miracles performed with it--how DO you get a tiny cake of fish crispy without overcooking it? Then we tasted fish none of us had ever heard of that rivaled many a meat dish for intense flavor--even without the pecan-crusted skin. Tasted a roasted loin lamb chop that came close to the experience of prime rib of beef and was graced with a cabernet reduction that beat the hell out of au jus. Candlelight. Cozy room. Just enough information--then perhaps just a touch too much as the evening wore on and we all grew merrier--delivered by the vintner's rep as each wine was poured. Generous with extra wine. Close attention from the waitstaff and the owner of the restaurant. Not bad at all. And the price was pretty reasonable for a 3-course meal with 3 wines plus dessert and a dessert wine. I liked the French 2002 Vero Chardonnay--tasted more like a white burgundy than a chardonnay. Everybody else liked the 2003 Domaine Chardonnay from Oregon. Oh, well. No accounting for taste. But if you like a subtle (not too oaky, fruity or flowery) but rich dry white wine (I'm usually all red), try the 2002 Vero. And if you want to try a fire wine tasting dinner, call way ahead.

Keep In Mind:
Rating everything 5 stars or all 1 stars is typically not very useful to others as makes you look a bit biased.

Remember, you can still visit a not so perfect place (ie, a dive joint) and still give it 5 overall stars.
