Bar food often tastes like an afterthought, but not so at the Fulton. The comfortable upstairs dining room shares space with an open kitchen roughly the size of a large closet, yet from this compact space comes thoughtful, often surprising food. Salads include greens with seared shrimp and calamari, brightened with lime-cilantro oil and mango syrup. Among several elegant appetizers, chicken empaûada is a standout, a flaky half-moon with black bean crÅme fraöche and salsa verde. Demi-burgers arrive cheddar-clad, resembling the world's chubbiest ""sliders,"" but the tender, flavorful beef is clearly top-quality. Warm chocolate cake is a Fulton signature dessert, its sensual liquid center a guilty but luscious pleasure.
