Reviews of House of Blues

House of Blues, downtown Cleveland's newest restaurant, is also one of its biggest - and loudest. Of course, it is part of a music club. Music-related artwork covers every imaginable surface - including the ceiling -- and the large main dining room is filled with loud music and the laughter of the young, vibrant crowd. The food, like everything else here, is New Orleans-inspired, and the portions are large; you can share most appetizers at least two ways. The catfish nuggets are crisp and flavorful, and while the sweet potato fries beneath them are not as crunchy, their taste makes up for their texture. The baby-back ribs entree is quite satisfying: The ribs are tender and tasty in a Jim Beam barbecue sauce and come with mashed sweet potatoes. The Creole jambalaya with shrimp, chicken, tasso ham, andouille sausage and roasted green onions is also a treat, but one that comes with a lot of spice. Eat half of your meal and take the rest home so you can have dessert, like the white chocolate-banana bread pudding with Jack Daniel's crÅme anglaise, whipped cream and a caramel halo, or the Key lime pie. The Gospel Brunch, offered Sundays at 10 am and 1 pm, features a terrific soul-food menu and live gospel music.
