I have been to johnny's 40 times and always loved the meal. Last night was a disaster. But worse than the poorly prepared food was the attitude of management. I went to have a conversation with the manager who I have known for years and he acted like I was trying to get away with a reduced bill. The apetizers (stuffed peppers) had zero taste, the duck sauce was disgusting, and the pasta putenese had no flavor. And their attitudes were positively unacceptable. I will never be back.

The others may come and go but Johnny's is the one dependable place to find supberb food, wines, and perfect service. My favorite spot is a window table in the bar. If the bar is too noisy or you don't like the piano backgroud, the dining rooms on either side are quiet and elegant. And the valet parking attendant doesn't ask to be paid up front (one of my pet peeves). I'm not a restaurant reviewer so I won't go into the culinary details--my problem is that I have settled on certain favorites and I find it hard to try the other offerings. Maybe I should go more often . . . hmm.

'Lil Bar (behind Johnny's) A Nightmare!January 20, 2006

Our server forgot to place our entree order with the main kitchen, which closed by the time we asked where our food was. We were forced to order from a very limited menu of mostly "bar" food, but the restaurant comp'd the meal. Upon leaving, I asked for my credit card, which was necessary for keeping a tab. Unfortunately, it was charged for another customer's tab, signed with the other customer's signature and given to the OTHER customer! I was told the charge would be immediately reversed, but it took contacting the attorney general's office to finally get reimbursed via check after waiting a month! I was originally told I would receive another comp'd meal for four, but the restaurant's accountant made no mention of this when I contacted him the last time about reimbursement. This does not take into account the five visits to my bank branch and hours on the phone with various company's transferring account information to correct electronic transfer errors. I absolutely changed all account information immediately. I understand the owners went to Key West for vacation. I hope they had a better time than I did visiting their restaurant!

Great live music, fun outdoor sidewalk seating, average service, food was an embarassment. Too bad becuase it is a great property, but not up to the reputation or the prices. 6 diners had all courses and everyone had at least one really disappointing (bad) course. Even the best items were okay at best from specials to menu items, salads, soups, and entres it didn't live up to reputation or price. The kitchen didn't get servings out all at once despite a lite crowd. This was the second time it was beyond not good. Too many better choices the area.

This is a place to see and be seen: You may spy a star from Playhouse Square's Broadway series or a visiting sports figure. Implicit in this is that the food is top-notch. Unlike its older and funkier sister restaurant, Johnny's Bar (on Fulton), the decor at this Warehouse District restaurant is stately and a little fancy, with gilt-edged mirrors, lace curtains and velvet drapes. Appetizers include lots of items that were popular in the 1920s and again in the '70s, and seem to be reemerging, such as escargots, onion soup gratinee, frog legs and caviar. Entrees include well-prepared meat dishes, such as lamb chops and filet of beef au poivre with a sauce of sherry, cognac, peppercorns and veal demi-glace; also, some that don't often appear on menus around here - steak tartare with capers, onions, tomatoes, egg and pommes frites. Fine desserts include Johnny's signature bananas Foster.

If you want a great dinner, great service and a great time visit here. My wife and I prefer to sit in the bar area with the piano playing. Easily our favorite place to eat downtown. From appetizers to the main course, it's all wonderful. My wife and I have been there many times, and not once have we had a bad expirence. It is well worth every penny paid to eat there and just be there. We highly suggest that you try it and then try it again. Happy Eating!
